What Is Inpatient Drug Rehab?

If you or someone you care about is battling a drug addiction, it is important to reach out for help. There are many treatment facilities out there that specialize in helping people overcome drug addictions. Checking into one of these facilities can provide the support, tools, and encouragement necessary to kick a drug habit once and for all.

The first option, outpatient treatment, is usually used for mild cases of addiction. With this treatment approach, the addict attends counseling sessions at the treatment facility during the day. Then, they returned to their own home to sleep at night.

Inpatient drug rehab, on the other hand, is a bit different. With this type of treatment, the addict checks into treatment and physically stays at the facility both day and night throughout the course of their treatment. In most cases, treatment lasts about a month. However, it can last as long as 90 days or more, depending on the severity of the addiction.

During the course of treatment, many different therapies are used to help the addict overcome their addiction. For instance, they may start out with medical detox to help them overcome their physical addiction to the drug with as few side effects as possible. Typically, this is done in a hospital-like setting where doctors and nurses can supervise and provide medication as needed.

Once the medical detox is done, the addict generally moves out into the treatment part of the facility. Here, they are assigned sleeping quarters. Depending on the facility, they could either get their own room or they could be put into a dorm-like setting with other patients sleeping in the same room.

Each day that the addict is in treatment, they undergo a variety of different activities ranging from one-on-one counseling with an addiction specialist to group therapy. They also may take part in recreational activities or other activities that are designed to teach them how to have fun without the need for drugs.

Inpatient drug rehab is highly effective, simply for the fact that it provides a safe place for addicts to recover where they don’t have to face temptation. Through this process, many addicts are able to build their physical and emotional strength so that they are far less likely to relapse once they re-enter the real world after treatment.
